According to the EU Parliament, in the resolution adopted with 357 votes, 20 against and 58 abstentions, the representatives voiced their concern about the escalation and the threat to regional security. They support the security of Israel and its citizens and condemned the simultaneous rocket launches by Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthi rebels against the Golan Heights and other Israeli territories before and during the Iranian attack. They expressed regret over the attack on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on April 1, attributed to Israel. In this context, the resolution reminds us of the importance of the principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular offices, which – as highlighted – must be respected in all cases under international law.
The MEPs called for restraint and to avoid worsening the situation. They welcomed the European Union’s decision to extend sanctions against Iran and called for the urgent introduction of austerity measures. They also called for the EU to add the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah to the EU list of terrorist organizations.
