At its plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament (EP) approved the legislation on net zero emission industry, the aim of which is to make industry carbon-free in the internal market of the European Union, reports MTI.

The legislation, passed by 361 votes to 121 and 45 abstentions, aims to increase EU production of clean technologies and ensure that the European Union has the right tools for the transition to clean energy.

The legislation aims to strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of EU production with net zero emissions, making energy systems safer and more sustainable. It creates better conditions for the creation of suitable projects in Europe and attracts investments with the aim that the EU’s net zero-emission technological manufacturing capacity approaches or reaches at least 40 percent of construction needs by 2030.

According to the plans, it will thus speed up the transition to climate neutrality necessary to achieve the EU’s 2030 climate and energy policy goals, and also support the EU’s energy independence aspirations.

It deals with technologies that make a significant contribution to decarbonization. Technologies to be supported include nuclear power, solar photovoltaic and solar thermal, onshore wind and offshore renewable energy, batteries and other energy storage, heat pumps and geothermal energy, electrolyzers and fuel cells, sustainable alternative fuel technologies, small modular reactors.

The legislation must also be officially adopted by the Council of the European Union, which brings together the governments of the member states.
