The results of the investigation primarily show that bird flu is much more widespread than previously thought. Dr. Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert at the University of Minnesota, also spoke on the issue:
The results of the study show that this virus has largely permeated dairy cattle throughout the country.
However, experts reassured the public that the pasteurization process completely inactivates the bird flu virus. However, they added that further tests would be needed to find out that there is no infectious virus in the milk.
To date, retail milk testing has not shown results that would change our assessment that the commercial milk supply is safe
– says the report of the food safety authority.
Previously, the presence of H5N1 was confirmed in a total of 33 farms out of 30,000 in the United States. Current investigations have shown that the actual infection rate may be much higher than known. So far, bird flu has been confirmed in only one American farm worker.
