Conservationists, marine researchers and veterinarians are trying to save about 140 beached bottlenose dolphins that were trapped in the shallow water on the southern coast of Western Australia on Thursday, MTI reported on the incident.

The Western Australian government’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Tourism said the dolphins washed ashore in Geographe Bay, near Dunsborough. 236 kilometers south of the state capital, Perth. The animals were trapped in the shallow water in four groups, within a radius of about 500 meters, and 26 of them have already died.

Last July, more than 50 beached bottlenose dolphins died on a deserted beach in Western Australia. Bottlenose dolphins live in a close social relationship, so if even one member of the group gets into trouble and gets stuck in shallow water, the others often follow, explained the University of Western Australia.
