The US Deputy Chief of Staff has announced that the US will soon triple the production capacity of the critical 155 mm artillery ammunition.

Currently, the country’s military plants are capable of producing approximately 30,000 devices per month, but this figure is expected to reach 100,000 by next summer.

Army officials said that the development previously depended heavily on the approval of the aid package in Ukraine. The nearly 61 billion dollar US shipment also contains a lot of ammunition, and this was worth the manufacturers’ initiation of development. In addition to increasing the capacity of existing production lines, new ones are also planned to be built in Arkansas, Kansas and Texas. An important difference is that while in Europe private companies control the production of 155 mm ammunition, in the United States the military is directly responsible for this.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated in February 2024 that as long as the Ukrainians shoot 2,000 rounds of ammunition per day, the Russians shoot three times that amount, which is why they desperately need them. There may be a realistic opportunity to overcome this disadvantage in the near future if they are really able to speed up the American production lines. Until then though

it is still necessary to take into account that the Russians will remain dominant in the critical area, which may even mean additional territorial gains for them.
