Index – Abroad – The Spanish prime minister may leave the government because of his wife

The court is investigating the wife of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, due to corruption charges, which is why the Prime Minister has temporarily withdrawn from public duties. He will decide whether he will leave office for good on Monday, April 29.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stepped back from his public duties to consider whether to remain in office after a court opened a preliminary investigation against his wife, reports the BBC.

The Spanish head of state said he had to decide urgently whether he would “remain at the head of the government” or resign.

The court opened the investigation due to the corruption charges leveled against the Prime Minister’s wife, Begona Gomez. In response, Sánchez said that “his wife will defend her honor and cooperate with the justice system.”

The complaint against Begona Gomez was made by anti-corruption activists Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), who have been involved in several high-profile court cases in recent years and are led by a man with far-right ties.

The Spanish Prime Minister announced that he will make a decision on Monday, April 29, whether he will remain in office.
