We can prepare for regular power outages if the left continues to push for the green transition in Europe as it has been doing so far. At least this was revealed in the interview given to Portfoli by Benjamin Lakatos, the president and CEO of the Swiss-based MET Group. Lakatos told the portal that: “the process will take 10-15 years longer than the green transition deadlines between 2030-2040, which are planned and undertaken by almost everyone,

if we do not accept that there may be power outages from time to time.

According to the CEO, the acceleration of the green transition would endanger the security of supply and would also cost “an awful lot”. According to Lakatos, the transition can be achieved at a “sustainable” speed by around 2050, but this would also require “community planning”, because without this, as he put it, the process will not be balanced. He added that careful implementation is also important because

if Europe runs too far ahead in implementation, while China and America go the other way, it could lead to trouble”.

This would mean that the continent would lose its remaining competitiveness, and the industries still here would relocate elsewhere. Lakatos also cautioned against “one-size-fits-all” solutions, emphasizing that every country “design your energy mix in such a way that it is as diversified as possible, as cheap as possible, and based on your local positions as much as possible”.

He cited the Hungarian solar power plants as an example, in this area “we overtrained our right arm,” he said. That is why it would be important to develop as many power generation solutions as possible in the central areas, which can offset weather-dependent renewable energy production.
