According to the European climate report timed for Earth Day, the number of deaths caused by heat has increased by about 30 percent on the continent in the last 20 years.
Europe is the fastest warming continent, its temperature is rising almost twice as fast as the global average, stated the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the European Union’s climate change monitoring service, Copernicus (C3S), in a joint report released on Monday, at the same time drawing attention to the serious health and economic consequences.
Based on the most recent five-year averages, European temperatures are currently 2.3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, while globally this value is 1.3 degrees Celsius higher. The countries of the 2015 Paris climate agreement set a goal of stopping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial era.
The WMO and Copernicus report saw greenhouse gas emissions as the main cause of last year’s extreme heat and noted that the El Nino weather phenomenon also played a role. The two organizations warned that the world is not doing enough to combat the consequences of global warming.
This year, the report examining the impact of climate change on Europe focused on the impact of heat waves on human health, and found that the number of deaths directly related to extreme weather has increased throughout Europe: last year, there were more than 150 deaths from storms, floods and forest fires. Extreme heat poses a particular health risk to outdoor workers, the elderly, and those with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. According to the report, the number of heat-related deaths has increased by around 30 percent in Europe over the past 20 years.
Extreme weather has brought heat waves, wildfires, droughts and floods. In addition, due to warming and unusually little snow, glaciers throughout Europe continued to shrink, and in the last two years, about 10 percent of the remaining glacier ice in the Alps melted. The report also touched on some exceptions: in Scandinavia and Iceland, for example, temperatures were lower than average.
According to estimates, the economic losses associated with weather and climate change in 2023 exceeded 13.4 billion euros (HUF 5,276 billion). Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of the WMO, called the climate crisis “the greatest challenge of our generation” and emphasized: “The costs of fighting climate change may seem high, but the price of inaction is much higher.”
Last year’s heat waves also warmed the waters of the seas unusually strongly, and the surface temperature of the European seas was the highest since records began in 2023. The amount of precipitation in Europe was 7 percent higher than the average. A third of the continent’s rivers experienced high flooding, and 16 percent experienced severe flooding. In the catchment area of the Loire, the Rhine and the Danube, near-record or record-high water flows were measured during the stormy period from October to December. The floods affected the lives of around 1.6 million people across Europe.
As a result of last year’s forest fires, an area equivalent to the size of London, Paris and Berlin burned together, the report reported, noting that Greece was devastated by the largest European fire to date, covering approximately 958 square kilometers.
“Many records were set in Europe in 2023: a record number of Europeans were affected by heat waves, the temperature of the oceans was at a record high, and the melting of glaciers also set a record,” listed Samantha Burgess, deputy director of Copernicus. He added: “We know that extreme events like these are likely to become more frequent and more intense due to climate change.”
In the report on the situation of climate change in Europe, the two organizations also pointed out that Europe should develop strategies aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change in order to switch more quickly to renewable resources. Last year, 43 percent of electricity on the continent came from renewable sources, compared to only 36 percent the year before. More energy was produced in Europe from renewable energy sources than from fossil energy carriers, the report said.
