Pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman is working in a recording studio when the city is bombed. The recording is interrupted, Wladyslaw returns home.

Back home, his Jewish parents and siblings try to decide what to take with them if they have to flee Warsaw due to the growing Nazi threat. Wladyslaw does not want to leave the city because he loves and is at least as fond of Dorota, the young cellist.

The woman is very worried about the growing anti-Semitism. His family moved into the walled ghetto not long ago and are trying to adjust to life there.

The Jew Itzak Heller collaborates with the Nazis and wants Wladyslaw and Henryk to join the Jewish police, but the brothers refuse the offer. As they try to earn money to support the family, conditions take a turn for the worse.

Everyone is deported except Wladyslaw, who Itzak drags out of line. Benek, the owner of the restaurant where he used to play the piano, gives Wladyslaw a job, but his situation gets worse and worse, the German officers and soldiers are very rude to him.

The pianist seeks help from the underground movement, which hides him in various protected houses, where he has nothing to do but stare out the window. After the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943, Wladyslaw can be himself again. With the help of Dorota and others, including German Captain Wilm Hosenfeld, the pianist tries to survive until the war ends.

The 143-minute French-German-Polish-English-Dutch film drama, made in 2002, was directed by Roman Polanski, and the film was awarded almost countless awards.
