Some good advice from the National Directorate General of Disaster Prevention on what to do in the event of road, rail, water and air traffic accidents!

  • If you witness or experience such an accident, check for injuries and assess the dangers around you.
  • If you think your life is in danger, leave the scene of the accident immediately.
  • Call the emergency number 112 and dictate the most important details of the event that you know: description of the accident, location, number of injured, whether you noticed a fire or additional dangers. If the truck involved in the accident has a danger sign (rectangular orange sign with or without numbers) or a barca (a rhombus-shaped sign set on top), inform the authorities about the content of the numbers and figures on them.
  • During an accident during the transport of dangerous goods, if you notice a fire or additional dangers (e.g. gas, fuel, or hazardous material leaks), move as far away from the vehicle as possible and inform the authorities immediately of these conditions.
  • If you assess that your life and health are not in danger, then depending on your medical knowledge, try to treat the injured until the ambulance arrives. Start the row with the most serious case. Do not use methods that you are not fully familiar with, and the results of which you are not sure.
  • Do not move the injured person unless they are in further danger or urgent treatment is necessary (eg arterial bleeding).
  • Do not move the wreckage, do not try to free trapped injured people, unless they are exposed to additional danger or if immediate care makes it necessary.
  • Try to keep calm, act judiciously.
  • Reassure the injured.
  • Share all the information you have about the accident with the authorities.
  • If you are unable to provide assistance in the immediate vicinity of the accident, support the work of the arriving ambulances, policemen, and firefighters (e.g. bring water, warm blankets, lamps, help transport the injured, etc.) – in the case of a mass disaster, all help is needed.
  • Follow the instructions of the bodies involved in the rescue.
