The graphics chip, which promises to be 45% faster than the basic PlayStation 5, can be a boon especially for games that aggressively use dynamic resolution.

The editors of Digital Foundry talked about the still unannounced half-generation console update in the video embedded below. It also mentions the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology and the Ultra Boost Mode (we reported on them in more detail earlier). The editors believe that games that use AMD FSR 2 upscaling will benefit from the best performance gains.

A few examples of this: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XVI (they look blurry in Performance graphics mode), Immortals of Aveum… but those titles that openly change image refresh rates can also get better performance rate (VRR) mode is also included. This is mostly found in Sony’s self-developed games (God of War: Ragnarök, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Last of Us: Part I, The Last of Us: Part II Remastered…).

If it’s a game that doesn’t use dynamic resolution and still maintains a stable 30 or 60 FPS, then PSSR and Ultra Boost won’t significantly improve performance, so they’ll need a separate PlayStation 5 Pro patch , so that the console’s better specifications are accompanied by better performance. According to Digital Foundry, the PlayStation 5 Pro’s GPU will provide a solution in GPU-limited scenarios, as many games use a more aggressive dynamic resolution during these scenarios. Many titles on the PlayStation 5 are like this, but the PlayStation 5 Pro will guarantee a more stable experience.

The PlayStation 5 Pro hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s likely that Sony will unveil it in the fall, and (seeing the release period of many other previous consoles) it will hit the stores in November. How much will the company ask for it?
