The still-unannounced console from the Japanese company, which will likely follow the same format as the best-selling Nintendo Switch (portable as well as dockable), will lack the performance of Valve’s handheld PC, but how much of a problem is that?

Eurogamer’s technology segment, Digital Foundry, has published a new video in which it is highlighted that it should not be considered a big problem if the performance of the Nintendo Switch 2 (remember that the console does not even have a name due to the absence of an official announcement) does not reach the current gen consoles, or what Valve’s portable PC offers, because the big N’s next console will receive ports during multiplatform developments that meet the platform’s specifications. This includes support for Nvidia DLSS upscaling technology, meaning games can be rendered at lower resolutions and still look good.

A previously thought-impossible port can be a good example for its successor: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, released in 2015, was developed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, but Saber Interactive, with the help of some black magic, is excellent for Nintendo Switch made a port, taking into account the technical features of the platform. The performance of the Nintendo Switch 2 can be compared to that of the previous console generation: the processor and graphics chip will perform better than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, so perhaps the device of the Japanese company may be able to achieve better results than the Steam Deck, which it previously said we’ve heard it’s been pushed back from late 2024 to early 2025, so like the Switch, it could be released in March.

But the architectures are significantly different (the consoles of Steam Deck, Sony and Microsoft are all AMD-based; Nintendo is open to Nvidia with the Switch, and the T239 chip may also be present in the Switch successor), so it’s hard to compare the two. And in terms of battery life, Nintendo might be better than Valve… but it’s not official.
