In addition to the fine, the European Commission also said that Apple should relax its anti-government rules. According to TechCrunch, Spotify has rolled out a new update to its app that includes pricing information for EU users. Spotify also said it has no plans to accept Apple’s new business terms in the European Union in response to the Digital Markets Act.

Last month, Spotify announced an update to the App Store that included links asking users to visit the Spotify website to subscribe. However, this update was never approved by Apple. Spotify says it “has not received permission from Apple” to update.

The new version of the Spotify app, which was submitted to the App Store this week, “includes at least details that are in line with the European Commission’s decision.” It includes pricing information for Spotify packages and instructions on how to subscribe outside of the App Store, but no actual link to Spotify’s website.

Spotify does not accept the new terms of the App Store in the EU, instead it sends an app update with prices

Dustee Jenkins, Spotify’s head of public affairs, said in a statement:

“Despite Apple’s attempts to penalize developers with new fees, we remain committed to giving consumers real choice in our app without increasing costs. That’s why we’ve submitted a new update to Apple. It includes basic pricing and website information – the minimum outlined by the European Commission in its music streaming ruling.

Apple continues to violate European law by charging developers to communicate with consumers through in-app links. The time has come for the Commission to enforce its decision so that consumers see real, positive benefits.”

The TechCrunch report also states that Spotify is opting out of new business terms offered to developers in the EU in response to the Digital Markets Act. If Spotify accepted these terms, it would be able to use alternative payment methods and pay Apple a lower commission. Spotify can also be downloaded outside of the App Store on an alternative app market or on its website.

Spotify rejected the Core Technology Fee component of the new business terms, which charges €0.50 per annual install for apps popular enough to reach more than a million downloads a year.
