Apparently the people of Redmond are desperate to squeeze a little extra money out of the operating system.

The members of the Windows Insider program noticed about two weeks ago that a new form of advertising appeared in the “Recommended” section of the Start menu in the test version of Windows 11. This interface, which appears every time you open it, currently shows newly installed and recently used applications, but in the new edition, paid recommendations also appear on the list.

Usually months can pass between such tests and the public debut, but now, to the surprise of many, the people of Redmond stepped on the gas and dropped the advertising bomb.

The official description of the recently released KB5036980 update already states that the Start menu will offer users “a small collection of selected applications” from the Microsoft Store, which means paid ads in flowery language. The update is only optional for the time being, but with this you can practically be sure that Microsoft will deliver it to all Windows 11 machines in the near future.

As we wrote in our original report, the function can fortunately be fired, which the Engine house > Personalization > Start submenu, but this cannot comfort those who have used the Recommended section until now, as the switch-off applies to all recommendations, including newly installed and recently used software.

It’s interesting that it’s American PC World based on your experience, the ads don’t appear even when we install the update, which suggests that Redmond hasn’t activated them yet, even though they mentioned the feature in the KB5036980 update description. However, we do not hope that there is too much time left before the ads appear, if the test was interrupted so quickly by Microsoft.

According to a former developer of Windows, this is by no means the biggest problem with the Start menu of the 11th edition, which we wrote about in more detail here.
