Matt Ritchie, the Scottish player of Newcastle United in the English Premier League, passed his driving test on Thursday. However, compared to many of his colleagues, the midfielder did not earn a club manager’s license, or even a coach’s license, but rather a much more ordinary driver’s license: he successfully passed his truck driving test.

The news was posted on Thursday by one of Matt Ritchie’s instructors on his former Twitter handle, X. According to the permit, the winger can now drive not only larger goods transport trucks and trucks, but also, for example, buses.

Accordingly, the joke bombs have already started, according to which he should be given a lifetime contract at the club so that he can drive the team’s bus after his retirement.

Matt Ritchie’s decision is understandable from the point of view that although many footballers decide to become coaches after their playing careers, only a few of them are able to stick in the system.

At the same time, there is a dire shortage of drivers in the UK. It is estimated that almost 40,000 lorry drivers are missing from British roads. On average, beginner truck drivers in the United Kingdom can earn 30-40 thousand pounds, i.e. 13-18 million forints per year.

The 34-year-old player – whose contract expires this summer – earned this amount every week as a soccer player.
