The Olimpia Szálló, then Hotel, was in operation from 1972 to 2002, then until 2018 it was only disfigured by the beautiful surroundings and slowly rotted away. It got its name from the fact that in the year it was handed over, the Munich Summer Olympics took place, and the Hungarian team preparing for the competitions set up its headquarters here.
At the end of the 1960s, the state relied more and more on tourism revenues, so several hotels were built first on Lake Balaton and then in the capital as part of the so-called touring program – this is how Normafa was also designated as a location, wrote the HVG. The hotel was designed in 1969 by the Ybl Miklós and Kossuth awardee Zoltán Farkasdy, construction began in 1971, and it was completed a year later, in 1972, but was handed over in several stages. Its original name would have been Hotel Touring Normafa.
The Olimpia had 188 rooms, 364 beds, a 100-person bar and a 150-person restaurant, bistro, and lounge at guests’ disposal.
Socialist realism echoes in every small detail of the hostel, but for example in the kitchen, new elements have already appeared. The last days on the counter it is recalled by the notes of menus and orders found on the day.
On the wall of the Marco Polo special room, there is still an almost untouched, huge world map that has seen and could tell many things.
Olympia was one of the first in the country to try saunas and the special features of the solarium, so it is not surprising that in its best years it operated almost continuously with full houses.
Even familiar faces remained for the days before the demolition.
