Index – Abroad – The former star footballer of Liverpool was banned from company management

--

Ex-Liverpool and England football star John Barnes has been banned from his business management activities after his company failed to pay about 190,000 pounds (more than HUF 87 million) in taxes, reports the BBC.

Barnes, 60, was the sole registered director of media representation company John Barnes Media Ltd., which was liquidated in 2023.

The insolvency proceedings established that he paid no taxes at all between November 2018 and October 2020, despite the fact that his company had a turnover of 441,798 pounds (more than HUF 202 million).

Barnes has signed a disqualification notice that will ban him from serving as a director for three and a half years beginning April 24.

The undertaking prevents him from participating in the support, establishment or management of any company without special permission from the court.

He owes the state a lot of money

According to the authority’s calculations, John Barnes Media, operating in West Byfleet, Surrey, failed to pay £78,839 (more than HUF 36 million) in corporate tax and £115,272 (almost HUF 53 million) in VAT.

In November 2023, a judge dismissed Barnes’ bankruptcy petition after officials told the court he had paid the debt.

Barnes also played for Watford and Newcastle. He won 79 England caps between 1983 and 1995 and became manager of Celtic after his football career ended. In November 2022, Liverpool FC announced that Barnes, who works as a television pundit, has been appointed as the club’s ambassador, and with this task he will represent Liverpool at home and abroad.
