In the Hlidarfjall ski center in Iceland, the Japanese ski jumper Ryojú Kobajasi flew 291 meters on Wednesday, which no one has ever reached, but the International Ski Federation (FIS) did not recognize it as an official world record because it did not meet the conditions. The event took place during a campaign by the beverage manufacturer Red Bull, during which Kobajasi jumped over Austrian Stefan Kraft’s world record of 253.5 meters several times, his longest flight was 291 meters.
Ski jumper Kobajasi Rjojú aimed for the 300 meters
The Olympic champion, two-time all-around World Cup winner, and three-time four-bar competition winner Rjojú Kobajasi originally aimed for the 300 meters, but he was still very satisfied after his huge, roughly 10-second flight.
“It’s hard to put this feeling into words. A dream of mine came true. This experience will boost my career and I will draw strength from it in the future. Last September, when I visited this place for the first time, I only saw a rock, and then it was still hard to imagine this place covered with snow, but I knew that this place has a perfect natural slope. I couldn’t have asked for a better rampart, it was an incredible experience. At the same time, I know that 300 meters was my original goal, so I will gladly measure myself again,” said the 27-year-old Japanese ski jumper.
A breathtaking video of Kobajasi’s jump of 291 meters was also taken, on which a drone accompanied the ski jumper during his flight. The video shows several people at the bottom of the rampart welcoming the Japanese ski jumper, who, not surprisingly, could not stay on his feet after landing. Rjojú Kobajasi posed happily after completing the record attempt, but the FIS emphasized that it does not certify the top, which is still held by the champion of the combined world cup, Stefan Kraft.
