Helmut Markós clearly refused the proposal: the F1 team is leaning towards a one-year extension. According to the consultant, Sergio Perez is the number one option for 2025.

Sergio Perez predicted during the weekend of the Japanese Grand Prix that he will know his F1 future within a month – if we base it on that, his fate in Mexico will be decided in just two weeks.

It is clear that the goal of a competitor is to sign a long-term contract with his team: in this regard, a tendency can also be observed in the shared history of Perez and Red Bull. He joined Milton Keynes on a one-year contract in 2021, which was extended to 2022 during the summer break. That season, Perez already received his new two-year contract in May, which expires in 2024.

Continuing this pattern, the Mexican driver proposed an even longer-term, three-year contract starting in 2025 – but Red Bull clearly refrained from such a long-term commitment.

“We are not there yet to finalize it,” Helmut Marko told Motorsport.nl. “But it has nothing to do with the rule changes, he knows he has to perform. At first, he asked for a three-year contract, but we will find a solution,” the consultant hinted at the fact that Perez’s initial proposal was swept away.

Based on Marko’s previous statement, I feel even the new two-year contract at Red Bull is a lot – the consultant answered the question of OE24: “Everything is possible, as our team is working very well at the moment. But if you get a guaranteed contract for two years, there is a risk that your performance will decline…”

All signs point to an extension for Perez

In recent years, the replacement of Perez has usually come up, but Red Bull’s communication currently shows, both Christian Horner and Marko’s position, which is typically more critical of the driver, that the question is more about the duration, not whether they will extend Perez’s contract until 2024. based on the start of the season, he is the team’s favorite.

“It is clear that this is Checo’s best season since he has been with us. If he maintains this performance, he is the best option for Red Bull in 2025,” Marko told Kleine Zeitung.
