José Mourinho was most recently the head coach of AS Roma, but the club announced on January 16 that the Portuguese coach is leaving by mutual consent, with immediate effect. “On behalf of all of us, we would like to thank José for his passion and efforts since he joined the club. We will always have great memories of his time at Roma, but we believe that the club’s interests are served by an immediate change,” AS Roma said in a statement.
Mourinho arrived at AS Roma in May 2021, with which he won the first-ever European Conference League in 2022. Last year, the team was a finalist in the Europa League and lost to Sevilla in a penalty shoot-out in the final at the Puskás Arena in Budapest. When Mourinho left, Roma was in ninth place in the league after twenty rounds with eight wins, five draws and seven defeats, but only four points short of the sixth position that already qualified for the Europa Conference League.
Daniele De Rossi took over the management of Roma, and the change has been good for the team: they are currently in fifth place in the table, and in the Europa League they reached the semi-finals on Thursday, having just eliminated another Italian team, the AC Milan, which is second in Serie A.
Mourinho had just left Rome, the news was that he already has a new team, which is Al-Sabab in the Saudi league. But the Portuguese coach didn’t get here. He was brought into talks with Bayern Munich after it was revealed that Thomas Tuchel would be leaving in the summer.
Mourinho: I want to coach again from the summer
What is certain: Mourinho is currently without a job. At the end of March, journalists caught up with him at the Portuguese stop of the MotoGP series in Portimao, where he said the following:
“I don’t know anything about Bayern Munich’s interest.” I am currently free, but I want to coach again from the summer – said the specialist, who was also asked if he would take up work again in his native Portugal. “Never say never, especially in football.” Football is my life, I’m willing to accept any team, that’s why I don’t rule out any possibility. I really want to go back.
