According to a recent research, theBy the end of the century, the sunny, spring weather usually appears earlier, at the beginning of winter, for the inhabitants of the Nordic countries.. On the contrary those living in the south – including equatorial regions and southern Europe and the United States – for the most part, they will enjoy fewer temperate days throughout the year.

This is the conclusion of an innovative study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), published in the Journal of Climate, which examined the long-term effects of climate change on some of the world’s destinations. By combining data from 50 climate models, the research maps how the “outdoor days” will change in the various destinations by 2100. The term refers to 24-hour windows in which temperatures are pleasant enough for most people to enjoy outdoor activities. (Winter sports were not included here.)

The implications for quality of life, travel and tourism are huge. There are clear winners and losers on the list.

Russia, Canada and other northern countries will get more outdoor days in the future… At the same time, developing countries such as Ivory Coast will have to make do with fewer outdoor days, so there is a clear inequality between northern and southern countries.

says Yeonwoo Choi, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and a member of the research team.

The study also looked at how climate change is changing the places tourists visit. This affects where and when people will travel, as well as the tourism economy of countries that rely on holidaymakers. The diagram below shows how outdoor days will change in the world’s most visited tourist destinations (the ranking was prepared by the UN organization responsible for tourism in 2022).

The greatest impact is expected for tropical destinations. THE in the Dominican Republic, where by 2100 the number of outdoor days will be 124 days less, the temperate climate will decrease by 50% throughout the year. It is located in the northern hemisphere Mexico, India, Thailand and Egypt you will experience a similar reduction, between 55 and 86 days per year. The United Arab Emirates will also suffer: it is expected to lose 85 days of good weather a year, not including a possible increase in the torrential rains that have brought Dubai airport to an unprecedented shutdown this month.

In contrast, France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Austria will gain between 18 and 60 days outdoors by 2100.

This will be largely due to the warmer winter, which is not very good news for the ski industry. In the Mediterranean area Greece it is estimated that by 2100 it will lose more than 30 days of outdoor days due to hot summer temperatures from May to September.
