Index – Abroad – The Austrians announced that many people would leave the European Union

--

Economx pointed out that, according to a recent survey, most Austrian citizens consider EU membership important, yet the number of those who were uncertain and would rather leave Austria from the European Union increased.

According to a representative survey published on Friday by the IMAS institute in Linz, more than half of Austria’s population believes that EU membership is important from an economic and social point of view. Because it gives the country more advantages than disadvantages.

At the same time, according to one in five Austrians, it should leave the union.

The summary of the economic portal also touched on the fact that, according to the researchers, two months before the European elections, a remarkable trend is that positive attitudes still dominate in Austria, but the number of committed people has decreased by more than ten percent compared to 2019. Thus, the “Öxit” came into a new light – the cohesive force of the community deteriorated spectacularly, even among the traditionally pro-Union Austrians.

Austrians do not feel European

According to the survey, 29 years after Austria’s accession, half of the population does not feel European. Moreover, in 2019, this value was still at 62 percent. It is worth adding that there is a high proportion of people with a lower education level among those who oppose the union. Those with a higher education prefer to see the advantages of European Union membership – their number has doubled since 2014.

The sense of belonging is diminishing. Fewer people believe that the residents of each member state belong to one community.

In the research, they also pointed out that 40 percent of Austrians are particularly uncertain and skeptical, while 28 percent think that belonging to the European Union is more disadvantageous overall. Also, 22 percent were so disillusioned that they would even support leaving the European Union if a referendum was called in Austria.

Finally, the proportion of those who did not answer the question about the exit is significantly high. This may indicate that the number of those who are uncertain has also increased significantly.

Are the Hungarians steadfast?

We reported a few days ago that Eurobarometer published its latest poll, which it conducted between February and March 2024. The research assessed the opinions of European Union citizens on a number of issues. The questions also concerned the European Union and its institutions, as well as domestic conditions. The final result shows that the perception of the union in Hungary has improved since the last survey.

It is clear from the statistical data that Hungarians think about the 27-member economic and political formation in accordance with the EU average.

AT THE SAME TIME, EASTERN EUROPEAN ATTITUDES MUCH MORE POSITIVELY THAN THE OTHER COUNTRIES OF THE REGION.

The most critical of the European Union were the Bulgarians within the region. The survey revealed that the majority of Hungarians are satisfied with the work of the European Parliament. While 46 percent of the population assesses the parliament’s activities positively, only 14 percent think negatively about the parliamentary body, and the proportion of neutrals is 39 percent.

Based on the data, Hungarians believe that they should live up to their civic obligations, and 70 percent would participate in the European Parliament elections if they were held next week. Only 10 percent think it is not at all likely that they will go to vote.
