Kassim Majaliwa, the Prime Minister of Tanzania, reported that floods and landslides caused by weeks of heavy rains in Tanzania have killed 155 people and injured at least 236 people.
The prime minister told the parliament that the El Nino climate phenomenon only aggravated the current rainy season, which caused floods and destroyed roads, bridges and railways. In his parliamentary speech on Thursday, the Prime Minister highlighted:

He noted that the devastating weather affected about 200,000 people and 51,000 households, several schools were completely flooded, which had to be closed, and those in trouble were rescued from the flooded buildings by the rescue services.

In his speech, Majaliwa called on people living in low-lying areas to move to higher areas and urged district officials to ensure the delivery of food parcels to the needy.
While Tanzania bears the brunt of the catastrophic weather, the entire East African region has meanwhile been hit by heavier-than-usual rains during the current rainy season, with reports of flooding from neighboring Burundi and Kenya.
