In view of the great interest, the Settlement Afforestation Program announced in 2020 as part of the National Afforestation Program will continue next year, said Minister of Agriculture István Nagy in Mecséren.

On the occasion of the closing of the program’s spring planting period, the head of the ministry said that preparations have already begun at the Ministry of Agriculture, and according to the plans, in the next phase, in the first round, settlements with less than 10,000 inhabitants, which have not yet won, will be able to apply for trees.

István Nagy reminded that in the last three years, 46,000 rowan trees were planted in 1,500 settlements. This year they are planting in two stages, in spring and autumn.

During this year’s application period, the available ten thousand rows of trees were sold out in one day, with three times oversubscription, of which 4,000 are distributed in the spring planting period and 6,000 in the fall, in all counties. As in the past, support stakes, covering mulch and protective grids are provided for each tree for professional planting.

In the county of Győr-Moson-Sopron, 39 settlements successfully applied for this year’s program, a total of 543 trees are planted. Of this, 226 pieces during the spring planting season.

István Nagy highlighted that the negative trend in forest planting has been reversed, and since the announcement of the National Afforestation Program in 2019, Hungarian farmers have won tenders to plant 43,700 hectares of new forest. In five years, the forests grew by more than 180 million new trees.

Since 2020, at the initiative of the government, at least 10 trees have been planted for every newborn, and the Forests of Newborns alone have grown more than 4 million saplings across the country.

The Minister of Agriculture emphasized that the government is committed to having more and better quality forests in Hungary, which is why, as part of the Common Agricultural Policy, three times more funds than in the previous budget period, a total of HUF 310 billion, are available for the development of Hungarian forests. He stated that the work must be continued, helping and supporting the preservation of existing forests, and the goal is still to increase the country’s wooded areas to 27 percent.

Imre Zoltán Csaplár, the mayor of Mecsér, informed that 30 spherical cigar trees will be planted in the Szigetközi settlement as part of the Settlement Afforestation Program. (MTI)
