Who can build the most expensive Danube bridge ever in Hungary?

--

The government froze 700 billion in investments, but thanks to EU funds, the construction of the new Danube bridge can begin in Mohács. László Szíjj’s company submitted the cheapest offer, they are also working on the Kalocsa-Paks Danube bridge, which can be completed by summer.

What happened? The winner has been announced, who can build the new Danube bridge near Mohács. Of the three bids received, Duna Aszfalt’s was the lowest, and they undertook the investment for HUF 294.96 billion net. (Swietelsky and Strabag also applied for the job.)

What is being built? The 21st Danube bridge in Hungary will be completed with a superstructure length of 756 meters and will have three parts: a floodplain bridge and the riverbed bridge itself in the middle. A 2×2 lane road will lead through it and there will also be a separate cycle path. The contractor is building a total of 40 kilometers of road on both coasts with even more roundabouts and bicycle infrastructure, part of the investment is to connect the bridge with the M6 highway.

How much is the investment?

This will be the most expensive Hungarian Danube bridge.

The Ministry of Construction, which issued the tender, previously estimated the value of the investment between 300-320 billion. Although Duna Aszfalt won with a lower bid, it will still be one of the most expensive investments in the country, while the government previously decided to postpone an investment worth 700 billion due to the state of the budget. However, this project is largely financed by EU money.

The Kalocsa-Paks Danube bridge, planned to be handed over this summer, is also being built by Duna Aszfal, for 92 billion. It will be a longer, 946.2-meter-long bridge with 10 supports, which also has a three-part structure, but its profitability is questionable.

When can it be ready? They can be handed over to traffic in the summer of 2028.

Who builds it? Duna Aszfalt has grown into the largest construction company in the country, the winner of numerous state tenders. Previously, they were not interested in bridge construction, but after the acquisition of Simicska’s Közgép, they further expanded their portfolio. The owner of the company is the billionaire László Szíjj, who also does a lot of business with Lőrinc Mészáros. In the most recent ranking of Forbes, he is listed as the sixth richest Hungarian, and his estimated wealth can be attributed to the costs of the current investment.
