The tour starting from Gergelyiugornya awaits bikers with 50 kilometers of experience.

One of the most prestigious cycling tourism awards is coming to the county of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg. In 2024, based on the votes, the cycling route Beregi kör won the title of Cycling Route of the Year.

The Beregi kör presents the heritage of the Middle Ages and the remains of ancient volcanoes strung together on a bicycle adventure tour – of course, together with the wonderful surroundings of the upper reaches of the Tisza.

This year, the Bicycle Route of the Year competition was announced for the fifth time, which was won by the Beregi district with 1,743 votes.

The 11 finalists received a total of more than 11,000 votes from cycling enthusiasts. On the occasion of the Transport Culture Day event series, the KTE Traffic Safety Department, Aktív Hungary, the Active and Ecotourism Development Center, the Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt., the Hungarian Cycling Tourism Association and the Hungarian Cycling Club jointly announced the tender.

This year’s favorite cycling route leads through the eastern tip of Hungary.

The tour starting from Gergelyiugornya offers 50 kilometers of experience. The first attraction on the road starting to the east is the Tákos Reformed Church, which is also referred to as the Barefoot Notre Dame. There will also be a presentation of churches with shingle roofs: you can also meet impressive buildings built in the Middle Ages on Csaroda, Tarpa and Márokpapi. In Tarpa, primeval nature shows itself, the ruined volcano of Nagy-hegy reveals the reality of the geohistorical past. Those cycling on low-traffic asphalt roads can let off steam at numerous bicycle rest areas and hiking centers.

The signs always show the right direction, so it is not easy to get lost. In the summer, it is worth cooling off in the waters of the Tisza on the free beach in Jánd or Gergelyiugornya. The circuit can be completed with a detour to Tivadar, where the Tisza exhibition house and the open beach are the main attractions. Anyone who visits Bereg for a bike tour will surely return home full of experiences. However, this tour is only the tip of the iceberg, the region awaits you with a complete network of bicycle tours.

Dozens of nominations for this year’s Bicycle Route of the Year application were received from all over the country during the two weeks of the submission period. From these, the professional jury compiled the 11 finalists voted for by the public on April 19-24. between.

The title of Bicycle Route of the Year can be awarded to a route that is attractive to tourists, has good road quality, and is safe to ride on. With the campaign, the organizers want to show new destinations to the cycling public so that lesser-known locations also get attention. Calling for a healthy life is also an important task of the campaign. In addition, a tour could not be unforgettably successful if you had to walk on the wrong road or in heavy traffic. The Day of Transport Culture has set this goal: everyone in traffic should pay attention to those around them, follow the rules of the KRESZ, so that everyone gets home safely and with good memories.

Voting took place on the Facebook page of Aktív Magyarország until midnight on April 24.

In 2020, the road section between Tatabánya and Tata was the winner, in 2021, the line leading over the bicycle bridges between Poroszló and Tiszafüred was the public’s favorite, and in 2023, the bicycle path around Lake Deseda received the most votes. Last year, the Wenckheim cycle path around Békéscsaba received the title.

In 2024, the number of votes among the 11 competing applications was as follows:

  1. Beregi circle 1743
  2. Veszprém—Balatonalmádi 1384
  3. Veszprém—Márkó 1131
  4. Pusztamagyaród—Szentpéterfölde 1127
