Seven prison guards are the defendants in the proceedings that were initiated because they beat a handcuffed prisoner and kicked him while he was lying on the ground. The case was allegedly committed out of revenge, because the prisoner had broken the nose of one of their comrades, and a centurion was also among the perpetrators, who got in line by not reporting the overreach to the prison commander.
Seven prison guards were brought before a court-martial at the Debrecen District Court because they claim that in the summer of 2022 they beat a prisoner in revenge because he broke the nose of one of the prison inmates with one punch. The prisoner could not defend himself because of the handcuffs. According to the indictment, not all of them hit, someone just watched but did nothing.
The background of the case is that the prisoner allegedly fell ill and asked for a doctor. The doctor was escorted in by a guard, but the prisoner had to be arrested and that’s when the prisoner hit the correctional officer. The other guards then ran over, handcuffed the prisoner, escorted him to the medical room, and then beat him.
Although the prosecutor did not say in detail how the abuse could have happened, RTL Híradó knows that
the prisoner’s head was hit against the wall, he fell to the ground and was then kicked.
Among the guards were a centurion and a woman, but none of them reported the incident. The captain said he expresses his agreement with his colleagues by not writing a report on the overreach. The prosecutor’s office requested different punishments for the defendants for gang abuse, depending on their role in the case.
The most severe prison sentence would be 6 years and 6 months, the other perpetrators and accomplices would only receive less, while the female prison guard would only be sentenced to a probationary period.
None of the defendants admitted their guilt, they did not testify, and they requested that the proceedings continue with a trial. That is why none of their sentences became final, and the trial will only start later.
