A dream of more than two decades in the life of the Epreskert Primary School has been fulfilled, after a modern property with a floor area of approximately 1,800 square meters was built with a government grant of more than one billion forints and additional self-help from the local government. The gymnasium of the Epreskert school will serve both the students of the institution and the citizens of the southern part of Debrecen.

At the ceremonial handover on April 24, Csilla Fórián Gondáné, the school’s director, expressed that an old dream had come true with today’s handover of the gymnasium, which had been awaited for more than two decades. “Now the children can exercise, play sports, and train in dignified conditions.” I hope that several competitors will be trained here who will later represent our country at European and world competitions, he said.

The gymnasium of the Epreskert school creates a worthy environment

Ádám Schmidt, the State Secretary responsible for sports at the Ministry of Defense, revealed that as a sports leader, it is always special for him to come to Debrecen, where the sports life is constantly developing. He is convinced that such a broad spectrum of the sports world appears here, which is also unique nationally. – I was here last time a week and a half ago, at the women’s handball national team matches, the audience in Debrecen was also needed for them to qualify for the Olympics. Now we have four teams at the world competition, he pointed out. Speaking about the Sportoló Nemzet Program, he said that the goal of the initiative is to draw the attention of as many people as possible to the importance of regular exercise.

Believe in what you do and do what you believe in! I trust that you all believe that it is good to play sports, and that you can become healthier because of it. Sport helps to overcome everyday challenges. Our task is to create the possibility that the right conditions are available for everyday sports

said the state secretary responsible for sports.

Debrecen makes dreams come true

“Making dreams come true is the greatest thing in the world.” And Debrecen is a city that realizes dreams that have not yet come true – said László Papp, mayor of Debrecen. He added that with the gymnasium of the Epreskert Primary School, a new thing was built that serves both the students and the residents of the southern part of the city.

This development has a long history. Gyula Szabó, the titular director of the school, fought for this gymnasium as a local government representative for nearly three decades. Thanks to all those who fought and kept this topic on the agenda, it is now the most beautiful, most modern gymnasium in the Debrecen education system

praised the city manager. He added that the part of the building is not only a simple gymnasium, but also an opportunity for sports for the students of the school and the residents of the district.

The story of the construction of the Epreskert school gymnasium began nearly thirty years ago

László Türk, director of the Debrecen Tankerületi Központ, also has personal experiences with the school, as he was previously a teacher and deputy head of the institution. “And today I can stand here, in my second home, as the manager of the maintenance company,” he said. He said that the municipality and the school district center worked together “hand in hand” on the investment to ensure that the children get the opportunity to be the best in what they are talented at. As he put it, Debrecen gave a house, which the institution turns into a home.

Gyula Szabó, the titular director of the school, said that the history of the gymnasium began in 1996. – This investment has become synonymous with the words patience, faith and perseverance. From now on, this building must be operated and filled with life. And for this task, I think I have found a worthy successor in the person of the director – he praised. At the end of his speech, he proudly shared that his grandson will start his studies at the school from September of this year. “What I couldn’t get as a director, I get now as a grandfather.” Today is a happy moment, twenty-seven years of work has come to an end, he said.

For me, the gymnasium of the Epreskert Primary School is a symbol of how the city administration experiences and responds to crises. We can find several examples of this in history, since Debrecen founded a college after the Battle of Mohács, during the Turkish occupation, and developed a university after the First World War. Unfortunately, the past years were also characterized by crises, but Debrecen built and developed during this period as well

– said Zoltán Piros, the local government representative of the district.
