How many kilos? Has a boyfriend? – they bombarded those applying for Semmelweis with absurd questions

--

How many kilos? Has a boyfriend? – such and similar questions had to be answered for several students who want to continue their studies at Semmelweis University – reported Eduline.

As we wrote, due to the changed admission procedure, from this year on the medical university, applicants must also take part in an oral interview. According to SE’s previous statement, during the admission hearing, “the student’s preparation, skills, general education, motivation, and interest in the chosen major are assessed.”

On the other hand, the high school student referred to as Helga in the Eduline article – who arrived in vain with a CV, a letter of motivation and recommendation, as well as experience in Germany – was asked about something completely different. Helga told the newspaper that she “constantly felt as if they wanted to involve her in everything”, and the interviewers asked if there was a doctor in her family. Then one of the committee members, a man who was on the phone almost the entire conversation, asked him how many kilos he weighed.

“Since I didn’t want to say it, I answered that I am definitely more than the 60 kilos I talked about earlier. To this, the man announced that it’s a big problem that I’m already overweight, but I’m lucky because I don’t look morbidly overweight.”

Eduline quoted the high school student’s words.

Helga was not the only one who was treated with personal comments at the SE oral admission. Several private students of Tamás Palya, the instructor who was fired from Kölcsey for civil disobedience, also reported on them in a Facebook group. According to her post, there was a girl who was asked if she had a boyfriend, and another Muslim student wearing a hijab was asked about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. And one of the admissions officers had to solve a situational task, the essence of which was what he would do if, as a male doctor, a young female student asked him if he could come to his apartment, Palya explained in detail to Eduline.

The paper also contacted the university about what happened, whose officials replied that “complaints were received from two members of one of the committees due to the overly critical statements of the committee chairman.” They then added that:

“After an immediate investigation of the case, the results of the exam chairman were excluded, and the admission score of the students concerned was determined by taking into account the opinions of the other two members.”
