In his speech opening the wine competition, Mayor Péter Szabó stated that the city wine competition is very important for the city for two reasons. On the one hand, because the farmers make excellent wines, thereby nurturing the local wine culture, and on the other hand, the city’s wine is selected here, which is also presented by the city on an international level, so the good reputation of the city is also taken beyond our borders.
The 137 wines nominated this year, including 47 white wines, 18 rosés, 8 sillers and 64 red wines, were examined in a traditional twenty-point system, and the wines’ aroma, taste, flavor, purity and overall impression were monitored. The announcement of the results was held the next day in the Prelate’s mansion. Wine judge József Herczeg, a member of the judging committee, informed about the city’s wine evaluation that until now there was always more red wine, but now there was more white wine. Eight varieties of the latter, including an outstanding one, which four of the six-person committee ranked first. This pinot blanc was made by Danubiana in Bonyhád from Paks grapes. Another Danubiana wine and Ferenc Hirczi finished in second and third place.
Seven were made of red wine, and István Szedmák’s French cabernet wine was chosen as the city’s wine. Ferenc Hirczi’s merlot wine came second, and István Szedmák’s Dorottya Cuvée third. János Keller assessed that the wines brought the results expected from the vintage, which he called an excellent but difficult year. 86 percent of the wines, i.e. 119, received medals, the rest received certificates. Of the 47 white wines, 5 received gold, 14 silver, and 4 bronze certifications. Of the 64 red wines, 21 were awarded gold, 28 silver and 12 bronze. Out of the 18 rosé wines, 4 were awarded gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze medals, while none of the siller wines were awarded gold, 1 silver and 7 bronze medals.
