Typically, the heating season lasts until April 15, but additional heating can be requested until May 15 in the apartment buildings where the majority requests it. However, in family houses, everyone is free to use their own heating system. A chimney is also connected to most heating systems, which require regular maintenance for our safety. with Csaba Nagy, the spokesperson of the Heves County Disaster Management Directorate we talked about the balance of the 2023/2024 heating season, of course from a fire protection point of view.

As we learned, during the current heating season in our county, there were 40 fires in chimneys, and 3 times the flames spread to the roof structure.

– The typical cause of chimney fires is that the flue is not properly cleaned and the soot deposited on its inner wall ignites and ignites due to intense heating – said Csaba Nagy, from whom we also learned how many apartment fires occur on average due to the poor condition of the chimney in our county. – Last year, there were fires in 293 homes, of which 52 were in chimneys. It can be said that every sixth house fire starts from the chimney, and the data of the past years also show this.

The spokesperson also emphasized that deaths and major damages related to apartment fires can be prevented if a smoke detector purchased from a specialized store is installed in the apartment. The device gives a loud warning of the fire in its initial stages, when it can still be easily contained. A fire of one square meter or even a few square centimeters is enough to generate so much toxic smoke that it can lead to tragedy.

As is well known, carbon monoxide can unfortunately be produced in our homes all year round. We were also curious about how many times during this year’s heating season the firefighters of Heves County were called out due to the deadly gas.

– There were 32 such cases in the last season, there were no fatal poisonings, two suffered some degree of poisoning – said Csaba Nagy, from whom we also learned why poisonous gas is produced in our homes and how we can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
