University of Miskolc | Innovative partnership in logistics education and research

A new chapter is opening in the development of the logistics field, thanks to the strategic cooperation agreement between the University of Miskolc and East-West Intermodal Logistica Szolgáltató Zrt. (hereinafter: East-West Gate), which was signed on April 22 at the Central European Logistics Conference held in Lillafüred (Central European Conference on Logistics 2024). The cooperation is an exemplary initiative that promotes the high-level training of logistics specialists and contributes to the development of the logistics sector in Hungary.

A close intertwining of education and practice

Pursuant to the agreement, the University of Miskolc and Europe’s largest and most modern land intermodal terminal, East-West Gate in Lunsklitke, are working together to modernize the training of logistics specialists, which includes, among other things, the development of new study materials, guest lectures, internships, and the provision of thesis and diploma project topics, a university includes the creation of a process simulation lab and the establishment of a student scholarship.

Research and development together

The cooperation between the University of Miskolc and East-West Gate provides new opportunities not only in education and training, but also in the field of research and development. Within the framework of the partnership, joint projects are launched with the aim of innovating logistics services and technologies. According to the plans, the partners will establish two joint research groups, which will be tasked with researching challenges related to the logistics and management of batteries and battery waste, as well as the application of digital twin technology in the field of logistics. As a result, the research capacities of the University of Miskolc and the market experience of East-West Gate are combined, promoting the development of new, innovative solutions.

Logistics professionals of the future

In connection with the agreement, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Miskolc, Prof. Dr. Péter Szűcs highlighted: “This collaboration is a huge step in the integration of logistics education and practical training. We are proud to stand by the East-West Gate and prepare our students for the challenges of the future together.”

János Tálosi, CEO of East-West Gate, added: “We feel responsible for the development of the region, for securing the future of the people living here. That is why we support young people to find training courses that provide competitive theoretical and practical knowledge locally. We have been working together with the University of Miskolc on this for years, and now we are expanding our cooperation. I am proud that our employees work at the East-West Gate terminal under world-class conditions and with the most modern technologies. We are happy to share our knowledge, experience, and results with the instructors and students of the University of Miskolc.”

Prof. Dr. Zoltán Siménfalvi, dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics of the University of Miskolc, explained: “We are sure that this cooperation will significantly contribute to the development of the logistics industry, it will provide talented students with the opportunity to supplement their excellent theoretical knowledge with practical skills that meet market needs.”

The director of the university’s Institute of Logistics, Prof. Dr. Péter Tamás, said: “Given the opportunities offered by new technologies, the education and research of logistics faces significant challenges, to overcome which, as well as for the dynamic development of the field, cooperation with the leading companies of the region is a key issue. A good example of this is cooperation.”
