Although there is a visible improvement, more than half of Hungarians still store their unused, old mobile phones at home – it was revealed in Yettel’s latest nationwide representative research. According to the company, a lot of valuable materials could be reused from the millions of mobile devices lying in drawers, while the batteries in them could even become a fire hazard over the years.

Based on Yettel’s latest nationally representative research, a fifth of Hungarians have been using their mobile phone for more than four years, most of them – at least half of the respondents – for 3-4 years, and a quarter of them only for 1-2 years. The device that is not in use is most often left at home, in the branch – more than half of the respondents (55%) keep the serviced mobile phone, although compared to the results of a previous research (63%), this can be considered an improvement.

There are about ten million mobile phone subscriptions in Hungary, so mobile devices that are no longer used can amount to millions in the depths of accounts.

Almost half (47%) of those who keep their old mobile phones have one device, a third (32%) have two, and a fifth (21%) have three or more mobile phones at home. The spread of used device receiving options and public awareness may play an important role in the fact that in just one year there has been significant progress compared to 2022, when almost half (46%) of the respondents who kept old mobile phones kept three or more used mobile phones in their account – moreover, pieces older than 10-15 years. The research shows that fewer and fewer people are throwing their old phones in the trash: after 10 percent in 2022, only 7 percent of those surveyed did so last year.

In electronic waste, including mobile devices, there are substances that do not cause problems during their intended use, but can be harmful to the environment if they are stored improperly or become part of municipal waste. For example, an aging battery can start to leak, releasing dangerous substances into the environment, or even cause a fire in the event of a short circuit – warns the telecommunications service provider, which counts used devices when buying a new mobile phone.

Recycling devices instead of throwing them in the trash is not only useful because of hazardous materials. In Europe, people produce more than two billion tons of waste per year, which causes a significant environmental burden. The European Union’s aspiration is to transition from a linear approach based on one-time consumption (“buy it, use it, then throw it away”) to the so-called circular economy. An important element of this is that the products – or the part of them that can be used – are recycled at the end of their life cycle; this also happens with mobile phones returned to the service provider. This reduces the amount of waste; valuable, increasingly scarce raw materials can be saved, and the reuse of raw materials and finished products also creates economic value.
