Fuel prices have risen significantly in recent weeks, as a result of which Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy invited the leaders of Mol Nyrt. and the Hungarian Mineral Oil Association (MÁSZ) to a meeting two weeks ago. Meanwhile, at the end of the previous week, the government assessed the market situation, and Márton Nagy already said then that it is not excluded that they will intervene in fuel prices this week, and he did not even rule out a possible price freeze.
The desire to intervene may be somewhat cooled by the fact that, according to holtankoljak.hu, a noticeable drop in wholesale prices will come from the middle of the week:
diesel will be cheaper by HUF 8 per liter from Wednesday.
However, the price of gasoline does not change in the middle of the week. According to Holtankoljak, the following average prices can be expected at the wells:
- 95 gasoline: HUF 650/liter,
- diesel: HUF 639/liter.
In addition, the world political factors and risk factors that recently raised the price of fuel in this country also continue to exist. It is thus questionable whether the price drop will continue or whether it will be permanent at all.
According to Mihály Varga, high fuel prices are not caused by taxes
In a Facebook post on Monday, the finance minister wrote that “Hungary has one of the lowest tax burdens on fuel in the European Union. High fuel prices are not caused by taxes”.
In his Facebook post, the minister published a table on the proportion of the tax burden on 95 gasoline in EU member states. According to the table, the tax burden on 95 gasoline in Hungary is 46 percent, while in Austria it is 52 percent, in Germany 55 percent, in Slovakia and the Czech Republic 49 percent, and in Poland it is 46 percent, similar to Hungary.
With this, Mihály Varga responded to an earlier statement: regarding the tax on fuel, Gábor Egri, the president of the Association of Independent Petrol Stations, said a week and a half ago on ATV’s Ejenes beszéd program that the public currently pays HUF 320 out of HUF 640 to the budget. Márton Nagy also responded to the suggestion earlier.
