For years, the hobbyist tomato grower has been caring for his seedlings with a passion that defies professional gardeners. True to his good habit, this year he is growing 50 tomato plants and 10 pepper plants in his home, which will be placed on his balcony as May approaches.

– I have reached the maximum number of seedlings – stated Tamás Földes. – I have a very nice wife, with whom we made a compromise, so that if possible, the seedlings would not fill every corner of the apartment, so 50 seedlings is what I still get by with.
Our host also told us the most important things to do in order to grow beautiful, strong and healthy plants ourselves.
“I myself always use seedling soil for planting,” he stated.
As you know, good quality land is the basis of everything. It is important that the soil is sufficiently loose and permeable, as this is the only way that the liquid does not stagnate in the ground. As a result, there can always be some water under the seedlings so that they can absorb themselves well. I also mix a little beef granules into the soil, which helps the plants develop properly. Light is also very important. With us, for example, several sunnier points of the apartment have become a kind of green zone.
Planting soil, beef granules, adequate light, water and a little love are necessary to have a real jungle surrounding us on our balcony in the summer.
– When I plant the seeds in small compartments, I water them well – continued Tamás Földes. – Later, however, I only water with a hand sprayer so that a possibly stronger jet of water does not wash them away. Planting several seeds in a pot has been a proven process for me for many years. I know many people only plant one, but I’m not afraid of any problems with them. One of my favorite varieties of tomatoes is the vilma, which is a real honey-sweet cocktail. It is very easy to maintain, as it grows to about the size of a geranium, so you can enjoy it on the balcony railing. And by summer, the area transforms into a real paradise carpet.

– When our seedlings have grown and the weather is good, it is worth planting them. I myself will definitely put them out on the balcony in May so that they can develop nicely. In such cases, all we have to do is ensure adequate watering, and it is also important that the students get enough sunshine. This year there are one or two rare plants in my “garden”, which came from England. For example, I have a black Russian tomato variety, which I am really looking forward to seeing, since I sowed it for the first time this year.
The design of the balcony garden not only provides juicy vegetables, but also a wonderful, intimate environment for the people living in the apartment. The balcony of Tamás Földes is very easy to spot even when walking down the street, as it turns into a real jungle in the summer, which supplies the whole family with fresh vegetables until October.
