Traffic stopped on highway 35 on the border of Debrecen, at the railway crossing on Sunday evening, several people reported on social media. According to the reports published in the Debrecenben Hallottam Facebook group, the light barrier of the crossing showed a prohibited sign for approximately 30-40 minutes, and the line of cars was significantly blocked as a result. At 8:30 p.m., however, one commenter already wrote that the light was working again.

Update: MÁV responded

Haon contacted the MÁV regarding the case.

On Sunday evening in Debrecen, the railway crossing of highway 35, Böszörményi út, was closed for about 40 minutes due to a technical fault, impeding road traffic until then. The error was fixed by 20:49. The traffic controllers found out about the technical fault of the barrier through a report from the safety device, the dispatcher immediately alerted the experts on standby, but due to road congestion they also only reached the scene with a significantly longer time to arrive

– wrote the railway company in its reply, which apologizes to those driving on public roads in this area on Sunday evening due to the disruption caused by the technical error, and thanks them for their patience.

MÁV requests compliance with the following KRESZ rules in order to avoid accidents when traveling at railway crossings:

  • The railway crossing should only be approached with extreme caution.
  • You may only drive through a secured railway crossing if both barriers are open, the light or sound signaling equipment does not give a prohibited signal, or the light barrier or the light barrier supplemented with a half-barrier gives a flashing white signal.
  • You may drive through the railway crossing continuously, i.e. without stopping, at an average speed of at least 5 km/h.
  • Overtaking at a railway crossing and directly in front of a railway crossing is prohibited.
  • Drive your vehicle into the railway crossing only if it is also possible to exit it safely (do not get behind a line of cars in the crossing)!

They also drew attention to the fact that if the equipment securing the railway crossing is not working – the flashing white light is not visible on the traffic light – we must always stop in front of the crossing. You may proceed only after you have made sure that no train is coming and that all the conditions for a safe passage are met.

In the case of a light barrier, a malfunction is indicated if none of the lights are lit.

They pointed out in their answer that the obligation to pay close attention, as well as the prohibition sign of the light signaling device, applies equally to pedestrians and cyclists, and even to vehicles using a distinctive sign.
