Well, it happened: this is how Prince Joachim feels now, after the Queen of Denmark stripped her children of their princely titles

--

There was a lot of dust and a lot of drama because of the decision of the abdicated Danish Queen Margaret, according to which she deprived her grandchildren of their princely titles.

Drama in the Danish royal family

The queen changed the ducal titles of Prince Joachim’s four children to counts. The background of his decision was to reduce the size of the monarchy, so that it would cost the Danish citizens less money. And his grandsons can live a freer life, away from their direct royal obligations, which as counts no longer burden them to the extent that they did before as princes.

Since then, the mood in the royal family has calmed down, although Prince Joachim had a terrible time accepting his mother’s decision. Now, long after the decision, the Duke gave an interview to his wife, Princess Marie, about their children:

— We moved on – said the 54-year-old prince, and then his wife added:

— We were not happy about the way it happened, but it belongs to our family. Very complicated.

The 48-year-old duchess also said that the matter was delicate because their children lost their identity in this way. They were treated as princes and princesses from birth, it was not just a title for them.

This is how Prince Joachim’s children are now

The couple moved from their home in France to Washington in the summer of 2023 so that Prince Joachim could start his new job at the Danish embassy under the Ministry of Defense. The transatlantic move took place almost a year after World War II. Queen Margaret made the surprising decision to allow Joachim’s older sons, 24-year-old Nikolai and 21-year-old Felix (who had children with his wife, Countess Alexandra Frederiksborg), and his younger children, 14-year-old Henrik and 12-year-old Athena (who were born to Princess Mary) deprives them of their royal titles they have had since birth.

The 84-year-old Queen Margaret announced the change in September 2022, which became official on January 1, 2023. Prince Joachim’s children lost their titles of duke or duchess and the title “His Highness”, but retained their place in the line of succession. The siblings are now known as His Excellency the Count of Monpezat or His Excellency the Countess of Monpezat, titles they received through their late grandfather, Prince Henrik.

The former monarch later apologized for causing a family rift over the sudden announcement after Joachim, Marie and Alexandra criticized the decision, but Queen Margaret defended the move as “necessary future-proofing” for the monarchy.

In 2019, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden did something similar when he announced that his grandchildren who were not directly in the line of succession would no longer officially be members of the royal house. However, the grandchildren involved retained their titles of duke or duchess, which became personal, meaning that any future spouses or children would have no right to the title, as it would not be inherited in their case.
