The sisters – Louise Julie, Pauline Félicité, Diane Adélaïde, Hortense Félicité and Marie-Anne – quickly realized that they could gain great influence with their exceptional beauty, and with their attractive appearance they attracted the attention of the French king, XV. Lajos’ attention as well. Louise was the first to seduce the monarch.

The recommendation letter

In 1738, Pauline asked her brother in a letter to introduce her to Versailles. The letter of recommendation went so well that Pauline entered the royal court that same year and gradually seduced the king away from her sister. The ruler is said to have fallen head over heels in love with the girl, pampering his new lover with lavish gifts, including one of his most impressive castles, Choisy-le-Roi.

However, in order for Pauline to become a respectable member of the king’s harem, she had to add her to a nobleman who was willing to agree to a nominal marriage for the sake of appearances. The ruler soon found the right spouse for his beloved, and on September 28, 1739, at the age of about 27, Miss Nesle married Jean Baptiste Félix Hubert, Marquis Hubert de Vintimille, Count of Luc, who was 8 years younger than her. The marquis behaved very appropriately as far as the intimate relationship between the king and his new wife was concerned, so he compensated with royal ranks and more and more estates. However, Pauline could not enjoy the privileged position for long, as she died in 1741, during the birth of her first child, at the age of only 29. His little son was named Charles by his father, but the king only nicknamed him “Demi-Louis”, that is “Little Louis”.

The child was eventually raised by his aunt, Louise Julie, who mourned her younger sister who died young for a long time. Both he and the monarch were shocked when Pauline’s exhumed body was mutilated by the riotous Parisians, who wrote on her coffin: “The king’s whore”. Based on this – despite their rivalry with the king – the sisters had a close relationship.

The Mourning King and the New Lovers

The king was still mourning his previous lover, Pauline, when Marie-Anne decided to seduce him. The shrewd girl with political ambitions soon found herself in the king’s favor. According to some sources, he was one of the court advisers who supported the war of the Austrian succession, but he also influenced other important domestic and foreign policy decisions. Marie-Anne was able to maintain her position with the king for a long time by offering him the opportunity to have an affair with her sister Diane at the same time. But after XV. Louis was defeated at Metz, Marie-Anne fell from grace. Later, in 1744, when he began to win the ruler’s sympathy again, he died suddenly of pancreatitis.
