Politicians, athletes, domestic and foreign celebrities are among the most frequently mentioned names that appeared in the online media space in 2023. The National Media and Communications Authority (NMHH) analyzed 93 popular media platforms – television channels, newspapers, radio websites, as well as news portals, social media platforms, forums and blogs – to find out who was the focus of news and public discourse, as well as which of the locations in Hungary and the wider world were featured the most.
The names of the thousand most frequently mentioned famous people were met a million times on the Internet, and domestic actors and men dominated among them. In the case of the hundred most common names, more than half of the mentions were people known from politics, even Dominik Szoboszlai or Max Verstappen could not come close to the leaders Viktor Orbán or Vladimir Putin. Jimmy Zámbó, who died in 2001, appeared in the online media twice as many times as Matthew Perry, who died last year, and Tina Turner did not even make the top ten, probably because of the TV series made about him.
In the case of geographical place names published in the online media space, four out of ten were related to Hungary, in four cases the mention was related to a European country or city, while in the remaining part it was related to the rest of the world. Hungary was mentioned 191,000 times in the examined media products, and Budapest 151,000 times.
Analyzing foreign geographical names, the news value of wars (Ukraine, Russia, Israel), the presentation of events related to the European Union (Brussels, member states and their capitals), and important foreign policy partners (China, USA, Turkey) stand out. Analyzing the statistics of certain days, Liverpool (460) stands out in connection with the contract of the Hungarian national team captain Dominik Szoboszlai, as well as the location of some sad events, such as Turkey (725) during the February earthquake, or Prague (424) because of the people killed and injured at Károly University. .
