Homemade air freshener sticks: long-lasting, decorative and available for pennies

After work, it’s a good feeling to come home to a pleasantly smelling apartment. What should we use? There are scented candles made from paraffin, soy wax, and rapeseed oil, we can find automatic air freshener sprays, and you can also choose essential oils and scent sticks. The latter are worth making at home in several ways: the prices of such products are quite steep in the store, and hyper-super, extra eco-friendly perfumes sell out very quickly because they are sold in smaller packages. Do it yourself! Stick perfume can be easily made at home and is also cheap.

What’s wrong with artificial fragrances and air fresheners?

They may contain compounds that act like synthetic hormones. They can strain the body, increase the risk of respiratory diseases, and cause migraines. Some can irritate the eyes and throat. Those with underlying medical conditions such as asthma or any chronic respiratory disease should be even more careful. Fragrance products should only be used for a short period of time. Natural fragrances are the safest. (We are thinking here of flowers and 100% essential oils.)

Homemade perfume sticks

It’s very simple, it doesn’t need a lot of ingredients, but it can perfectly replace store-bought perfumes. Let’s try what the homemade perfume is like!

What will be needed?

• on a flashy, narrower-necked bottle that can hold at least one deciliter of liquid
• for carrier medium (baby oil, almond oil, water and vodka, pharmacy alcohol)
• for essential oil
• on a wooden stick (bamboo, shaslik or loop stick)

How it is made?

Mix 20 ml of alcohol with 8-20 drops of essential oil, then add 2 dl of water. If you want to use a different carrier medium, replace it with alcohol and water. After that, you just have to mix it thoroughly and then pour it into the chosen bottle. Place 3-4 chopsticks cut in half and it’s ready. As the essential oil continuously evaporates, the house will always smell pleasant. If you want, you can also pour it into a pump bottle, which you can use as you like. You can even blow it on the armchair.

What are the best fragrances?

Take floral essential oil. You can get Geranium, Jasmine and Chamomile. These have a simpler, cleaner scent, not as strong as lavender, rose or ylang-ylang. We can even combine several scents. Let’s experiment with them.

If someone prefers sweeter scents, buy vanilla essential oil. But we can also choose from spices, there is anise, basil, thyme, fennel, sage, peppermint, camphor. We also have a few more powerful scents. There are citrus scents, but also patchouli, rosewood and sandalwood.

We can easily create the most suitable perfume for us, we can recreate our favorite that can be bought in the store.

However, it should be noted that there are oils that can cause an allergic reaction. And with small children, make sure they are out of reach and only use mild scents.
