A fix for the vulnerability of TP-Link’s Wi-Fi router has been available for a year now, but many people still haven’t updated their Wi-Fi network devices. It’s a serious problem though.
At least six different botnet malware exploits a security hole in TP-Link Archer AX21 (AX1800) wifi routers, reports Bleeping Computer.
The source of the problem in question is a serious vulnerability (CVE-2023-1389) in the web monitoring system of routers. This was identified by several security researchers as early as January 2023; TP-Link released a bug fix in March, but devices that have not been updated since then are still vulnerable.
The attackers also take advantage of the opportunity offered on the tray: versions of botnets called Mirai and Condi have also appeared on unpatched routers.
Cyber security company Fortinet recently issued a warning that they have observed a spike in botnet activity that exploits vulnerabilities in routers for malicious operations.
According to telemetry data, in March this year, the number of malicious activities exceeded 40-50 thousand on some days.
While botnets take a slightly different approach, they have in common that they gain control of a vulnerable router and trick the devices into engaging in malicious activities, such as DDoS attacks.
According to Fortinet’s report, even though the security update has been available for a year, many users are still using their routers with the old firmware.
