MG4 test drive – Mobilarena Car+mobile test

--

There is definitely fantasy in MG4, it ticks off the basic tasks cheaply, but it wants to offer more than it can.

Introduction

When the MG ZS EV visited us, I came away from it thinking that, okay, it was a cheap potato that was converted from a gasoline car that was launched on the market about 8 years ago, so it has its limitations, but it definitely proved to be suitable for starting to get interested, what they can do at SAIC under the MG brand if they are not bound by the past. And the MG4 offered a great opportunity for that.

Currently, two types of MG4 are available here, the cheaper one (HUF 12 million) is called Family, it has a 51 kWh LFP battery with a range of 350 kilometers, the Comfort equipped version costs 13.5 million HUF with a 64 kWh NCM battery and a range of 450 kilometers. The latter was with us, the test car was almost brand new, I took it over with 500 kilometers. What was already strange about the MG ZS EV is that you can’t extra the cars. There are these two packages, what is included, what is not included, there is no option for that. There is also an edition with Luxury equipment, but it is not available here, which is quite a shame. Not because the tester wants a full-extra machine, but because it only has things like the reversing camera or seat heating, and these are two functions that many people expect – rightfully so. Not to mention the heat pump, which is also only available here.

Instead, there are a host of other, not directly necessary extras. Like the V2L, that is, we can make a 230 socket anywhere through the charging connector. Or the active cooling grille, which closes the lower grille at the front when cooling is not needed, thus gaining some range. Instead of these – especially in an electric car – seat heating would be a more useful extra, not to mention the camera, because you can’t see much through the small rear window, although there is a radar for that. In other words, the end result is a strangely equipped car, the price of which is still below the European brands — but BYD came right at their heels with the Atto 3. Where can MG win?
