A car drove into a bus stop in the old town of Bratislava late on Sunday, killing and injuring ten people, Slovak authorities said.

According to the information of the fire department and the police, several people were waiting for the bus to the Pozsonyligetfalu district at the downtown bus stop. According to the statement of the Fire and Rescue Service (HaZZ), the firefighters who arrived at the scene freed people from the car and from under the vehicle.

It is not yet clear why the car drove into the crowd. According to press reports, not confirmed by the police, the driver was drunk. According to the witnesses, the driver did not even try to brake, he only stopped ten meters after the brutal run. So far, there are no indications of a terrorist motive in the case.

Slovakian politicians responded to the tragedy in turn. Zuzana Aufrichtová, the mayor of the Old Town, expressed her condolences and said that the street in the Old Town, where the accident happened, paid the highest price ever for human arrogance.
