They would destroy the favorite place in Japan for tourists who want to photograph Fuji with a huge wire mesh

The official of the city of Fujikawaguchiko considers the installation of the large off-road barrier “unfortunate”, but according to him, there was no other solution.

After the picturesque Austrian alpine village of Hallstatt, which innovated with the idea of a screen preventing selfies, the residents of a small Japanese town were satisfied that too many tourists came to visit them just because there is a place in the settlement where you can take perfect photos of the highest island in the Far East from its mountain, the 3776 meter high Fuji.

Located in Yamanasi prefecture, Fujikawaguchiko, with a population of 26,000, is popular among tourists not only because it is located on the shores of Lake Kawaguchi at the foot of an active volcano, but also because it has a convenience store – you can see in the pictures – Lawson general store – which in the background, it offers a beautiful view of the mountain considered one of the symbols of Japan.

However, so many irreverent tourists visit this place to take a few good photos of Fuji that the locals got upset and the city leaders decided to put a giant wire net to stop the influx of tourists, the Guardian reported.

“It’s unfortunate that we’re forced to do this because of some tourists who can’t follow the rules,” leave trash behind and don’t take traffic rules into account, a city official told AFP about the decision.

Of course, Mount Fuji can also be photographed beautifully from other points of the settlement. The location in question has become so popular because the combination of the mountain and the convenience store offers a special sight, the news of which has also spread on social media.

That is why the section of sidewalk next to the store became overcrowded with foreign tourists wanting to take photos.

In the past, they already tried putting up traffic signs and using security guards, but none of the methods worked, they decided to set up the huge net in their final desperation, the official added.

The view-destroying 2.5-meter-high and 20-meter-wide terrain barrier is planned to be erected next week, and will only be dismantled if the situation improves.

The measure is also intended to protect a nearby dental clinic from tourists, who sometimes park there without a permit or even climb to the top of the clinic building to take photos.

Since the lifting of epidemic restrictions, Japan has once again become a booming tourist destination, and the government is working hard to increase visitor numbers. In March of this year, they even reached a major milestone, when they hosted 3 million tourists in the country in one month.

However, the boom in tourism is not welcomed everywhere. In Kyoto, the locals complain that tourists who want to take photos harass the city’s geisha, but they also recently introduced an entrance fee on the most popular climbing route of Mount Fuji.

They are also trying to take action elsewhere against overcrowding caused by mass tourism. In Venice, one of the most popular destinations in Italy, for example, it was introduced just this week that tourists arriving in the city must pay an entrance fee.
