Index – Abroad – Emmanuel Macron: Europe is dying and may perish

--

French President Emmanuel Macron gave a speech at the Sorbonne University. According to a report by france24, he emphasized that Europe must rise to the challenges of a changed world and increase its defense capabilities. He then underlined:

Europe is not armed enough to fight global threats such as the Russo-Ukraine war.

“Europe as we know it today is dying and may perish,” said the French president, who said the future of the continent depends on the people who live here. “We need to build a strategic concept of credible European defense”. He then called Russia “unscrupulous”.

Can the joint force come?

He made an interesting statement that, in his opinion, both Russia and China ignore trade rules, and therefore called on Brussels to review its trade policy. According to him, it does not work that “we are the only ones in the world who respect trade rules”.

He warned that Europe is “unarmed to face the risks” in a world where “the rules of the game have changed”.

The French president represented European sovereignty, he wants autonomy for the continent in the fields of defense and economy.

He then asked the question: “how could we build our sovereignty and autonomy if we do not take responsibility for the development of our own European defense industry?” He then replied: Europe “must show that it will never be a vassal of the United States and that it can negotiate with all other regions of the world.”

According to the French president, preference should be given to European suppliers when purchasing military equipment.
