According to the Guardian, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez in his letter to citizens published on his social media page, he writes: is considering resigning after a court launched a preliminary investigation by his wife, Begoña Gómez against him on suspicion of influence peddling and corruption. Sánchez, who has led the country since 2018, said that the “serious attacks” on him and his wife made him take stock of his position, and then added,

will announce his decision on his possible resignation on Monday.

Due to the business affairs of Sánchez’s wife a Manos Limpias Proceedings were initiated following a complaint by an activist group called (Tiszta Kezek), whose leader has far-right connections. In his letter, Sánchez strongly criticized the organization and its political rivals, since according to him a Manos Limpias his complaint is based on alleged reports from openly right-wing and far-right news portals, and its purpose is to discredit him. As he wrote,

Begoña will defend his honor and cooperate with the justice system as much as necessary to clarify the apparently scandalous but at the same time untrue accusations.

Last summer, Sánchez formed a coalition minority government with the progressive left-wing Sumar partywhose president, Yolanda Diaz assured the Prime Minister of his support even now. The right-wing People’s Party, which won the election in 2023 but failed to form a government, meanwhile called on Sánchez to explain the accusations “instead of disappearing”.

The Socialist Prime Minister has been attacked by the right wing in recent times, for since the last election, it has been governing the country in cooperation with the Catalan and Basque regional nationalist parties. Especially since it was part of the controversial deal between the Catalan nationalists and Sánchez

also the adoption of the amnesty law granted to the organizers of the 2017 independence referendum.

With regard to Sánchez’s future, there was earlier speculation that the European Socialists could nominate him for the position of President of the European Council.
