The Pacific region has unquestionably belonged to the United States’ sphere of influence since the Second World War, and Washington remained unchallenged in the region for decades. This somewhat facilitated the attention of the decision-makers, which China attacked mercilessly: they almost hunted the smaller countries that felt they had been forgotten by American policy.

Beijing’s strategy has been to use its own growing economic power to increase its own influence.

Washington noticed that the great power in the East would slowly push its interests out of the region, so it again pays more attention to the small islands. The focus is now on the Solomon Islands, where the United States has shown little activity in the past two decades. However, the Western superpower has changed its lax policy and is returning to the small state. Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare welcomed the decision, saying his country “needs America.”

The United States stationed a Peace Corps on the island until 2000, but withdrew from the country when ethnic tensions erupted. In 2019, the American contingent received an invitation from the local prime minister to return to the Solomon Islands. The country, located about 2,000 kilometers northeast of Australia, is one of the poorest in the Pacific region.

Although the return of American unity has been on the agenda for years, many suspect that in the background they are actually hindering their appearance on the islands. According to the article, it is believed that China is pulling the strings and trying to cross paths so that the United States can return to the country. The fact that Sogarave severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 2019 in order to take a stand with China is an indication of Beijing’s diplomatic power. In 2022, relations strengthened further after the two countries signed a law enforcement and security agreement. The move caused alarm among major powers in the region, as they feared China’s excessive strengthening.
