The law is just waiting for Joe Biden’s signature.

The US Senate has passed a law that is unpleasant for the owners of TikTok, according to which they must sell the platform or it will be banned in the United States. That’s the law Joe Biden is waiting for his signature, who has already indicated that if he receives the proposal, he will sign it, the Verge reported.

Once signed by the president, owner ByteDance will have a year to complete the sale of TikTok or face a de facto ban on the platform in the United States. However, legal challenges may delay implementation.

The fact that the TikTok law was hidden in a high-priority foreign aid package helped a lot in its rapid adoption.

By doing so, the House effectively forced the Senate to deal with the issue earlier. In addition, it was also positive that an extra 3 months were assigned to the basic 9-month deadline. The bill passed 79-18.

Maria Cantwell, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, indicated: the proposal is not about punishing ByteDance or TikTok, but about spying on American citizens and influencing them. According to Bloomberg, TikTok previously told employees that if the law is passed, the company will challenge it in court, so a turn in the case is still expected.
