Index – Abroad – Pro-Palestinian demonstrations erupt one after another in the United States

--

As a continuation of the protest, some students walked out of classes at New York University on Tuesday and started a demonstration in support of the Palestinians and against Israel in Washington Square Park. According to estimates, 1,500 people had gathered by the afternoon, MTI reported.

Among the students’ demands is that New York University cut ties with Israel. In recent days, similar demands have been made at Columbia University and Yale University.

The presence of the authorities on the campus was reinforced on Tuesday, and the area where the violent demonstration took place on Monday was closed.

Columbia University, which also operates in New York, switched to online education on Monday due to the wave of protests and what happened at them. Demonstrations at Columbia University were openly anti-Semitic and supported the abolition of Israel and Hamas.

On Tuesday, the police also intervened at the University of Minnesota to eliminate the illegally formed protest camp. As a result of the measure, 9 people were detained in the university town of the Twin Cities region.

Student organizations are on fire

In recent days, pro-Palestinian student organizations have held demonstrations across the United States, including at the University of Michigan, Harvard, Yale, and the University of California.

In an official statement on behalf of the American government, Education Minister Miguel Cardona condemned what happened at the anti-Israel demonstrations on Tuesday. The senior politician of the Biden administration stated that he is deeply concerned about what took place at Columbia University, and added that the anti-Semitic hatred on campus is unacceptable. He reminded that in the case of Columbia University, the investigation has been going on since last November.

In response to the protests, President Joe Biden said at an Earth Day event on Monday that he condemned the anti-Semitic protests and therefore launched a program to deal with them, adding that he also condemned “those who do not understand what is happening to the Palestinians.”

Donald Trump called anti-Israel demonstrations “shameful” outside a New York courthouse on Tuesday before entering the building for another day of his trial. The former president blamed Joe Biden for what happened because he says the incumbent president is sending the wrong message, using the wrong tone and words, and not knowing who he supports in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The events were also condemned by the Consulate General of Israel in New York. It expresses its concern about the recent increase in anti-Semitic cases, emphasizes that such actions cross the boundaries of freedom of speech, and calls for action by the leaders of the institutions, which, according to the statement, have tolerated similar cases for too long.
