The Dutch parliamentary majority is against allowing transgender people to change their registered gender more easily, reports MTI.

According to the currently effective law, transgender people must have a declaration made by an expert if they want to change their gender in the register and in their official documents. The bill submitted in 2022 by Sander Dekker, the former Dutch minister responsible for legal protection, would have sought to abolish this requirement.

A motion signed by the New Social Contract (NSC) party led by Pieter Omtzig and the Reformed Political Party (SGP) called on the cabinet to withdraw the proposed relaxations of the transgender law within a month, and the House of Representatives did so on Tuesday by a narrow majority of 73 yes votes , 70 voted against it.

One of the initiators of the motion, Nicolien van Vroonhoven, a member of parliament from the NSC, gave an interview in AD, in which he often used language classified as transphobic.

– He told. He added that he believed women’s safety was threatened by real risks. He cited as an example that transgender women with male genitalia were sent to women’s prisons in England. “We cannot want such cases to happen,” he added.

Wieke Paulusma of Democrats 66 (D66) said that handling this issue with a simplified motion is careless and undesirable, and “in no way a sign of good governance.”

Acting Minister of Legal Protection Franc Weerwind, a D66 politician, also spoke out against the motion, as he believes it is not the right way to handle a complex issue. The acting cabinet could still decide to try to advance the measure, which would send the bill to another vote.
